The Ukrainian Embassy in Washington is confirming political meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, but it wasn’t by Republicans.

A Democratic National Committee insider allegedly tried to get the help of Moscow’s neighbor in digging up dirt on  Donald Trump’s campaign chairman, going as far as soliciting the help of the country’s president, according to a report in The Hill by John Solomon.

Ukraine’s embassy in Washington revealed that DNC contractor Alexandra Chalupa tried to help Hillary Clinton’s campaign by searching for compromising information about Paul Manafort and his dealings in the country, asking the Ukrainian government for help.

Attempts were also made by Chalupa to enlist the help of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on a U.S. visit during the 2016 campaign, in the hopes of getting him to comment on Manafort’s Russian ties, written answers to questions directed to Ambassador Valeriy Chaly’s office revealed.

Chaly noted that the embassy found the request inappropriate and refused to help Chalupa, who was considered a Ukrainian-American activist as they were unaware of any ties to the DNC.

……Solomon’s piece detailed the involvement of parliamentarian Serhiy Leshchenko and of Nellie Ohr, wife of senior U.S. Justice Department official Bruce Ohr, who worked for the Clinton-hired research firm Fusion GPS. She is now the subject of a criminal referral sent to the Justice Department on Wednesday.

Solomon also noted how the Obama White House invited Ukrainian law enforcement officials for a meeting in January 2016, sparking solicitations for help in investigating Manafort, and ultimately having Ukrainians leak documents in May 2016.

……Solomon pointed out that the DNC paid Chalupa’s firm, Chalupa & Associates, $71,918 during the 2016 election cycle, according to FEC records.

Ukrainian law enforcement officials have evidence of wrongdoing by the Democrats and their allies in Kiev, ranging from 2016 election interference to obstructing criminal probes. The deputy head of the Prosecutor General’s International Legal Cooperation Department,  tried unsuccessfully to get visas from the U.S. Embassy in Kiev to deliver their evidence to Washington.

Some of what they have:

  • Sworn statements from two Ukrainian officials admitting that their agency tried to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election in favor of Hillary Clinton. The effort included leaking an alleged ledger showing payments to then-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort;
  • Contacts between Democratic figures in Washington and Ukrainian officials that involved passing along dirt on Donald Trump;
  • Financial records showing a Ukrainian natural gas company routed more than $3 million to American accounts tied to Hunter Biden, younger son of then-Vice President Joe Biden, who managed U.S.-Ukraine relations for the Obama administration. Biden’s son served on the board of a Ukrainian natural gas company, Burisma Holdings;
  • Records that Vice President Biden pressured Ukrainian officials in March 2016 to fire the prosecutor who oversaw an investigation of Burisma Holdings and who planned to interview Hunter Biden about the financial transfers;
  • Correspondence showing members of the State Department and U.S. Embassy in Kiev interfered or applied pressure in criminal cases on Ukrainian soil;
  • Disbursements of as much as $7 billion in Ukrainian funds that prosecutors believe may have been misappropriated or taken out of the country, including to the United States.

All of this transpired after the Ukrainian effort to undermine the election of President trump backfired:

Kiev officials are scrambling to make amends with the president-elect after quietly working to boost Clinton.

Ukrainian government officials tried to help Hillary Clinton and undermine Trump by publicly questioning his fitness for office. They also disseminated documents implicating a top Trump aide in corruption and suggested they were investigating the matter, only to back away after the election. And they helped Clinton’s allies research damaging information on Trump and his advisers, a Politico investigation found.

That’s a crapload of crimes that AG Barr can add to his probe.
