Following a demonstration through the nation’s capital over the Independence Day weekend, Florida GOP Representative Anna Paulina Luna has formally requested a congressional investigation into the group known as “Patriot Front.”
The controversy ignited after approximately 400 masked members of the group marched through parts of Washington, D.C., near the U.S. Capitol and Eastern Market. The demonstrators wore matching outfits consisting of khaki pants, navy blue shirts, white face coverings, and hats while carrying American flags flown upside down and Confederate flags.
The Metropolitan Police Department monitored the demonstration, later noting that the participants boarded Metro trains to exit into the Washington suburbs, with a spokesperson stating that there were no reports of arrests, complaints filed, or calls for assistance associated with the group’s march.
In the wake of the event, Representative Luna (R-Fla.) took to X to demand that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee launch an inquiry into the organization’s funding and lack of previous federal scrutiny. “What I find odd about Patriot Front is how under Biden they were never investigated,” she stated.
“Elaborating on her call for a congressional probe, Luna wrote, “Well funded. Never investigated. The FBI under Biden looked into Catholics instead,” before directly appealing to the committee to “do some digging.”
The group, which the Anti-Defamation League identifies as one of the “most visible White supremacist organizations in the United States,” was originally founded in 2017 by Thomas Rousseau following the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
According to data tracked by George Washington University’s Program on Extremism, the group advocates for the creation of a White ethnostate and firmly opposes multiculturalism.
Luna’s call for a formal investigation arrives amid a wave of condemnation from several other Republican lawmakers who spoke out against the group’s presence in Washington. Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Representative Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) strongly rejected the group’s ideology and denied that their tenets represent mainstream conservative values.
“Denouncing the marchers, Carter stated, “What I’ll say is that that is not the soul of America.” He continued to distance his congressional colleagues from the demonstration, adding, “We are all created equally. That is what our whole impetus is based on here in this country. That does not represent the soul of America. We in America believe in equality, and that is simply not reflective, certainly not of the Republican Party.”
During the same broadcast, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum also addressed the Independence Day demonstration, denouncing the organization’s beliefs while simultaneously noting the legal protections granted to public demonstrations under the First Amendment.
“Expressing his personal distaste for the group, Burgum stated, “Certainly what they stand for is nothing that I could possibly agree with.”
However, Burgum maintained that federal authorities must respect constitutional boundaries regarding public demonstrations, concluding, “But one of the foundational principles of the United States, which makes democracy messy, is free speech. There are plenty of things that I see that I might personally find offensive, reprehensible, but in America, free speech is allowed,” he added.
It is currently unclear whether the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will formally adopt Luna’s request to launch an active investigation into the structural and financial operations of Patriot Front.

All 31 members of a white nationalist group arrested on suspicion of conspiring to riot in Coeur d’Alene during a Pride event had bonded out of the Kootenai County Jail as of Sunday afternoon.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office released the names and photos of all suspects on Sunday, a day after the Coeur d’Alene police chief said the Patriot Front members were en route to the Pride in the Park event with riot gear, a smoke grenade and paperwork police say resembled an operations plan.
Patriot Front is a white nationalist group with branches across the country that specializes in vandalism, racist propaganda and “flash demonstrations” meant to intimidate minorities, according to a report from the Anti-Defamation League.
The Patriot Front members were discovered packed inside of the back of a U-Haul moving truck after a concerned citizen tipped police off about what looked like “a little army.”
Thomas R. Rousseau, the group’s founder, was among those arrested. Also arrested were Kieran P. Morris, Garret J. Garland and Mitchell F. Wagner, all of whom were documented by the Southern Poverty Law Center and activist groups as active members of hate groups, according to an April report by the center.
Wagner, who is listed in court documents to be from Florissant, Missouri, was charged with felony first-degree property damage after he was accused of defacing a Black history mural at Washington University in St. Louis in March, according to Southern Poverty Law Center and news reports from that area.
The Sheriff’s Office said the men were from all across the country, including Michigan, Texas, Alabama, Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, South Dakota, Washington, Oregon, Illinois and Arkansas. Court records indicate that at least one of the men had lived in Missouri.
The Sheriff’s Office said it is unknown when their next court appearance would be.
