U.S. government is not directly sending $40 million per week to the Taliban or to the families of dead Taliban members.
As of March 2025, the U.S. halted all direct humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, according to a U.S. State Department spokesperson.
However, the U.S. remains the largest donor to United Nations-led humanitarian efforts in Afghanistan, contributing billions since 2021 through international organizations and NGOs.
UN-led cash shipments—averaging around $40 million per week—are flown into Afghanistan because the banking system remains nonfunctional. These funds are deposited into UN-controlled accounts at a private bank and are used to finance humanitarian operations, such as food, health care, and shelter for over 22 million Afghans in need. The UN confirms that these funds do not go directly to the Taliban or their central bank.
However, critics and U.S. lawmakers, including Rep. Tim Burchett, argue that despite safeguards, the Taliban indirectly benefit. This occurs when the UN or NGOs must exchange U.S. dollars for Afghan currency through the Taliban-controlled central bank, or when local NGOs—licensed by the Taliban—distribute aid and may be pressured to pay fees or divert resources. Some reports suggest the Haqqani Network and sanctioned individuals profit from currency conversion auctions.
While U.S. taxpayer money does not go directly to the families of dead Taliban fighters, concerns persist that the Taliban gain economic and political stability from the broader aid ecosystem. The UN acknowledges it cannot fully prevent some financial leakage but stresses that halting aid would trigger a far worse humanitarian catastrophe.
The problem, besides the Taliban, is the U.N. It’s a cesspool of despots and it’s riddled with corruption. It supports every communist and Islamofascist nation-state on the planet. No Western country with any moral decency or integrity would be part of it.
