Carly Fiorina on California’s Water Shortage: Thank the Eco-nuts

She’s right.

From The Blaze.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina said Monday that California’s water crisis is the result of “liberal environmentalists” who are “willing to sacrifice other people’s lives and livelihoods at the altar of their ideology.”

“With different policies over the last 20 years, all of this could be avoided,” Fiorina said on Glenn Beck’s radio program. “Despite the fact that California has suffered from droughts for millennia, liberal environmentalists have prevented the building of a single new reservoir or a single new water conveyance system over decades during a period in which California’s population has doubled.”

Fiorina said that as a result, 70 percent of California’s rainfall “washes out to sea” year after year.

“How is it possible that we don’t hear that story on the news at all?” Beck demanded.

“Isn’t that interesting?” Fiorina responded. “It is a man-made disaster. California is a classic case of liberals being willing to sacrifice other people’s lives and livelihoods at the altar of their ideology. It is a tragedy.”

Fiorina said Congress also has the power to ease some of the water restrictions for farmers, but the restrictions remain in place to protect certain forms of wildlife.

“In California, fish and frogs and flies are really important — far more important apparently than the 40 percent unemployment rate in certain parts of central valley,” Fiorina said. “So the Senate and the president could waive some of those water restrictions. They have been asked to do so, and they have refused to do so.”

And of course, in the practice of never letting a serious crisis go to waste, the jackbooted liberals in California are chomping at the bit to enact some of the worst oppressive measures against all private citizens. It’s quite possible that the government will force the installation of “smart” water meters in each home to monitor and restrict water consumption as the government sees fit. Violators will pay hefty fines and face the possibility of a water shutoff. Don’t think so? It’s already happening. Wherever these things are installed, water rates go up regardless of use, not to mention the problems with safety and privacy issues.

California is the petri dish of bad liberal experiments.

It’s gained a well-deserved reputation as an enclave for moonbats and out of control leftwing totalitarians.

  2. Well, she obviously isn’t much of a scientist if she thinks more reservoirs would have much effect on a once in 500 year drought. You can’t just store up enough extra water in basins for times this dry. You have to change the everyday usage habits.

California could reduce its water use by 17 to 22 percent with more efficient agricultural water use, including fixes like scheduling irrigation when plants need it and expanding drip and sprinkler irrigation.

Urban water use could be reduced by 40 to 60 percent if residents replaced lawns with drought-tolerant plants, fixed water leaks, and replaced old toilets and showerheads with more water-efficient technology. And instead of channeling used water into the ocean, the state could treat it and reuse it. That grosses some people out (because of the “drinking pee” factor) but has long been used in Orange County and is becoming more popular as the drought continues.

    1. Mikey,
The point she’s making is that the eco-nuts have thwarted every possible way to avert and/or minimize water shortages when faced with droughts like the ones that often plague the West and Southwest U.S. There’s no problem with treating waste water and reusing it. (http://www.cnn.com/2014/05/01/world/from-toilet-to-tap-water/index.html) Other places besides Orange County do it. That’s just one of the solutions. The main problem is total lack of preparation during years when there’s no drought. As for “usage habits,” the government is making citizens pay for its own bureaucratic overreach and stupidity . Doesn’t take a scientist to figure that out.

      1. Pointing fingers isn’t as useful as proposing solutions. She doesn’t know them because she’s a fired CEO and politician who never got elected. Of all the people I could consult with on how to solve a big problem, her name would be mighty low on the list.

        1. Mikey,
I’ve never been elected to public office either, but I understand stupidity when I see it.
The first step in finding solutions is addressing the problem and getting rid of it. The leftie bureaucracy helped create the myriad of disasters in California; the water shortage being just one item on the list. But let’s not point fingers. The problem lies with the policies which exacerbated the water shortage. Their “solution” is to enact Orwellian measures to penalize people who did not cause the problem to begin with, and certainly won’t help create a water supply adequate enough for the population.

          From Fiorina’s statement:

With different policies over the last 20 years, all of this could have been avoided. Droughts are nothing new in California — the state has suffered from them for centuries. The difference now is that government policies are making it much worse. Despite the awareness around this issue, liberals continue to develop and promote policies which allow much of California’s rainfall to wash out to sea.

Specifically, these policies have resulted in the diversion of more than 300 billion gallons of water away from farmers in the Central Valley and into the San Francisco Bay in order to protect the Delta smelt, an endangered fish that environmentalists have continued to champion at the expense of Californians. This water is simply being washed out to sea, instead of being channeled to the people who desperately need it.

While they have watched this water wash out to sea, liberals have simultaneously prevented the construction of a single new reservoir or a single new water conveyance system over decades. This has happened during a period in which California’s population has doubled. It is clear that improved or additional infrastructure would allow for greater conservation before droughts — especially as the population continues to explode — but California has not completed a major water infrastructure project in 50 years.

Largely because of these policies, 99% of California is in some kind of water shortage, according to the United States Drought Monitor, and 67% is experiencing “extreme” drought conditions. Thirty-seven million people are estimated to be affected.

          She’s right.

          1. She may be right that the politics there don’t help, but the politics didn’t cause the drought either. You can be “right” and still badly mis-identify a problem, and waste all your time placing blame.

          2. Mikey,
Oh, fer gawd’s sake. Anyone with half a brain (excluding the “man-made” climate change morons) understands that the droughts in California are a common occurrence and have nothing to do with politicians. The water shortage, however, was caused by political dumbassity. Now that the blame has been assessed, they should commence with the viable solution of improving their water infrastructure, which has been hampered by their stupid policies. Problem identified. Problem solved. Get it?

            SFC MAC

          3. No, you’re mistaken. This drought is not like the annual occurrences. It’s far, far worse. And no, I don’t think we “cause” the weather, even though we have some effect upon it.

When I see Fiorino’s list of solutions, I’ll be more interested in her opinion of who to blame. Until then, like always, I wouldn’t advise speaking out beyond her scope of expertise.

          4. Mikey,
She already suggested that they improve their water infrastructure, which is 50 years overdue, and thoroughly inadequate for the size of the population. It’s common sense and it doesn’t take a great deal of “expertise”. And when you have policies that divert 300 billion gallons of water away from farmers in the Central Valley and into the San Francisco Bay in order to protect a fish that is near and dear to overzealous enviro-nuts, you begin to see the where the water shortage problem originated. That’s water that can be used by people and would help abate any shortage. Understand?
Carly Fiorina is simply stating facts that have been discussed and acknowledged by those with “expertise”. They just need to do something besides threaten people with water cutoffs because of their own piss-poor policies. They should start the improvements ASAP. But don’t hold your breath.

            SFC MAC

          5. I understand completely. She, and you, think more construction, more projects paid for by taxes, would have more effect than changing behavior and concentrating on waste reduction. I don’t.

          6. Mikey,
Behavior won’t stop a drought. The behavior of the California state government which refuses to implement improvements, have contributed to water shortages. Speaking of taxes, perhaps they could stop raping the wallets of working taxpayers to support the millions of illegals that flood California every year. Some of that money could actually be used for the public good.
