Cemetery Worker Stole Veterans’ Grave Markers to Pave Garage and Shed Floors

A worker at the Rhode Island Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery was accused of stealing more than 150 granite gravestones to pave the floor of his garage and shed, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Rhode Island and federal court documents.

The worker, Kevin Maynard, 59, was charged with felony theft of government property after the Rhode Island State Police got a tip, according to court documents obtained by ABC News.

……Investigators followed up on the tip this past April, when they say they discovered the grave markers used as flooring for two makeshift garages and a shed at Maynard’s Charlestown, Rhode Island, home, according to the documents.

It wasn’t hard to find the culprit, since the motherfucker bragged about taking veterans’ headstones for his personal use.

While the headstones had been pulled from the ground and replaced for various reasons, VA policy calls for their destruction out of respect for the deceased veterans, whose names are engraved on the granite.

Michael Jolin, spokesperson for the RI Department of Human Services, which oversees the veterans cemetery, confirmed a state employee is being investigated for allegedly taking 202 headstones to use on personal projects, including in a foundation for a shed.

……The VA’s website states headstones may also be replaced “at Government expense if badly deteriorated, illegible, stolen or vandalized.” The website indicates the old headstones “must be destroyed, ensuring that the inscription is no longer legible.”

“They’re supposed to be put on pallets until the government picks them up,” Jolin said. Jolin said the unnamed employee allegedly took the headstones “over several years.”

Like worn flags that are in disrepair or in bad condition, the grave stones of veterans are to be disposed of properly, out of respect for the deceased veterans.

What makes it worse, is that many of the grave markers had the service members name, rank, branch of service, and year of birth and death clearly visible.

That piece of shit should be forced to replace every one of the markers he took and preside over a ceremony for each veteran’s grave.
