U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who disappeared in Afghanistan in 2009 and was held by the Taliban for five years, was scheduled to appear Tuesday before a military judge on charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
The arraignment will be held at Fort Bragg, in North Carolina. If convicted at a general court-martial, Bergdahl could get life in prison on the misbehavior charge and up to five years for desertion.
Bergdahl, 29, of Hailey, Idaho, walked off his post in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktika province on June 30, 2009. He was released in late May 2014 as part of a prisoner swap, in exchange for five detainees in Guantanamo Bay. The move touched off a firestorm of criticism, with some in Congress accusing President Barack Obama of jeopardizing the safety of a nation with the exchange.
Bergdahl’s disappearance and the possibility that he might face light punishment had angered many in the military, who say his fellow Soldiers took considerable risks to search for him.
Considerable risks is a fucking understatement. Six were killed looking for his worthless ass.
It took some time before charges were even brought against the little shitbag, since Obama treated him like a pet to advance his political agenda.
He deferred his plea and a decision on whether he will be tried by a military judge or a mixed court composed of officers. The next hearing will be on 12 January, 2016.
Background:
While on military duty in Afghanistan, Bowe Bergdhal left his gear in a nice neat little pile along with a note that explained he was running away. He willfully collaborated with the enemy and declared allegiance to Islamic jihad. The attacks his unit endured got more methodical and precise after Bergdahl’s desertion. They should have left him with the Taliban. They should have considered him an enemy combatant and killed him on the battlefield.
Barring that, he should be taken out and shot.

I say the son-of-a-bitch should be brought to the middle of nowhere and have a platoon hear the case and pass battlefield judgement right there on the spot.
Agreed 100% The platoon should be his own peers from the former unit.
