Turns out the guy is a Kos Kiddie. You just can’t make this shit up.
More crap from the poser, before his real identity was discovered:
Ellie Light, the ubiquitous letter writer arousing blogosphere suspicions that she is a White House operative spreading the gospel of Barack Obama, is actually a registered nurse. She lives in a California community near Bakersfield.
And her real name is Barbara Brooks. Or so she told The Plain Dealer today after a series of phone interviews, e-mails and records checks involving Brooks/Light, a family member, licensing records and property information.
The 51-year-old woman provided her address on Monday night to The Plain Dealer, and what she says is her real name in conversations today that followed checks of public records.
And just when you thought it couldn’t get any creepier:
— Ellie Light, the ubiquitous letter writer whose name appeared in newspapers nationwide praising President Barack Obama, appears to really be a male health care worker from California.
A man who identified himself as Winston Steward, 51, of Frazier Park, Calif., says he made up the name “Ellie Light” to protect himself from criticism and possible physical attacks, and used fake addresses across the country to get local newspapers to publish his letters.
“I am Winston Steward and have been sending the letters from Ellie Light,” he told The Plain Dealer in an e-mail late Tuesday, following a phone interview in which he said the same. “I hope this ends any confusion and sets the record straight.”
His e-mail address matched the address of the Ellie Light missives that were sent to newspapers to praise Obama and urged second-guessers to be patient as the president advances the Democratic agenda. The person identified as Ellie Light had been corresponding from that e-mail address to The Plain Dealer since last week, when the newspaper’s Web site, cleveland.com, disclosed that someone using the name Ellie Light was duping newspapers nationwide.
……The story took several twists this week, as The Plain Dealer and “Ellie Light” spoke first through e-mail and later via phone. At one point Tuesday, the person who had been using the name acknowledged it was fake — but then said her real name was Barbara Brooks. The person spoke in a husky voice that could pass for either gender.
But public records, including those of marriages, property and professional licenses in California and Texas, and phone interviews eventually led to the identity of Steward. Those interviews included several with a woman in Texas who said she is the real Barbara Brooks — records appear to confirm this — and that she is married to Steward, who for now lives in their other home in California but plans to join her in their home near San Antonio.
The woman said her husband was using her name because he was afraid he might be attacked by “right-wing crazies up in Bakersfield,” about 40 miles from their home in a mountain community.
Late Tuesday, after several denials, the person who had been e-mailing under the name “Ellie Light” said he’d finally set the record straight. He said he was, in fact, Winston Steward. He repeated that in an e-mail, using the same account as he had when using the name “Ellie Light.”
He said, however, that he and Brooks are no longer married, a point Brooks disputed.
“He’s making up all kinds of garbage,” she said. “We’re not divorced. We’re not separated. He just doesn’t want anybody to trace him because he’s afraid of the right-wing crazies up in Bakersfield.”
Hey, Winston Steward or whatever name you’ve chosen today: You’re a chickenshit with no integrity or guts. Pulling pranks is one thing, but not having the courage to fess up to who and what you are, as well as where you actually live, smacks of an individual with a lot to hide.
You caused confusion with your lies, multiple IPs, fake residential addresses, and calling into a radio station posing as your “wife”, yet you’ve got your panties in a wad over “right-wing crazies“.
This whole “ellie” episode has gotten more attention than it’s worth. Still, it’s good to know that there’s at least a few journalists out there who actually track down sources to get at the truth of who’s behind this kind of mass-produced propaganda.
Dan Riehl at Riehl World tacked down the Twitter account identified as “winston44”.
A leftwing PR company is at the top of his friend list.
A name which you first read on this blog this morning, thanks to reader Joseph D, whom I quoted as saying:
The corresponding twitter account has one friend, Jerry Schaefer, from Long Beach, California (the same town as some of Ellie’s claimed residences.) Jerry’s facebook showed one friend named Winston, Winston Steward. Under Winston’s friends, Barbara Brooks claims to be his wife and that he is Ellie Light.
Looks like Joseph D. was spot on. Winston Steward is a Kos Kiddie — see one of his diaries here. (H/t SarahW, who has been sharp on this.) (Link: http://winston-steward.dailykos.com/)
And the first person he followed on Twitter is the president of a D.C. based public relations firm. An expert on outreach to Hispanic voters, who is writing a book chapter that will touch on Obama’s (and McCain’s) Latino outreach strategies.
Ellie Light aka Winston Steward
This guy is a certified fruitcake. He went to great lengths to cover up his identity, gender, and connections, just to engage in a lovefest and letter writing campaign for Obama. Many of the embarrassed newspapers who printed his letters, have apologized to their readers.
Steward, like other hoaxers, learned a tough lesson; when you use the internet to spread bullshit, it can also be used to track it to its source.
