The man authorities say killed four U.S. Marines when he attacked two military sites in Chattanooga, Tenn. was a practicing Muslim who reportedly showed signs of becoming increasingly devout in recent weeks.
Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, 24, was shot and killed by police after he attacked the Marines at the Navy Operational Support Center and Marine Corps Reserve Center at around 11 a.m. Thursday. Before attacking the military center, police say Abdulazeez sprayed an Armed Forces recruiting center seven miles away with bullets, leaving a police officer with a non-life threatening ankle wound.
“While it would be premature to speculate on the motives of the shooter at this time, we will conduct a thorough investigation of this tragedy and provide updates as they are available,” an FBI official told Fox News, hours after the deadly attack. A law enforcement source told Fox News that Abdulazeez was not on the FBI’s radar prior to the shooting.
……Abdulazeez was born in Kuwait to a family of Jordanians. A federal official told the paper that Abdulazeez had become a naturalized American citizen, though it is not clear when. Abdulazeez grew up in a middle-class suburban subdivision just across the Tennessee River from Chattanooga itself. The Chattanooga Times Free Press, citing county property records, reported that Youssuf Abdulazeez, the family patriarch, had owned the house his son grew up in since 2001. It was not clear whether the family had lived elsewhere in the U.S. before arriving in Chattanooga.
……Neighbor Dean McDaniel described Abdulazeez and his sisters to the Times as being polite and well-behaved. He said the girls and their mother wore head scarves in public, while Abdulazeez dressed in jeans, T-shirts and shorts. He added that Youssuf Abdulazeez and his wife spoke in a foreign accent, but their children did not.
Three other people — a Navy sailor, a Marine Corps recruiter and a police officer — were wounded in the attack. Sources told Fox News early Friday that a female sailor, who is in serious condition, underwent surgery and made it through the night much to the relief of doctors. The police officer was shot in the ankle. The recruiter was wounded in the leg and has been released from the hospital.

The 24-year-old Kuwaiti man who murdered four Marines in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Thursday recently published two posts about Islam on his blog.
Mohammad Yussuf Abdulazeez’s website is titled, simply, “MYABDULAZEEZ” and has just two articles dated from Monday. On Thursday, the 2012 University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduate murdered the Marines outside of a recruiting center. He died while fleeing from the scene, either after shooting himself or after being shot by police.
The first post of Abdulazeez’s blog is entitled “A Prison Called Dunya.”
In it, Abdulazeez decried existence on earth, or “dunya,” and said he longed for paradise.
He wrote:
“Subhnallah, this life we are living is nothing more than a test of our faith and patience. It was designed to separate the inhabitants of Paradise from the inhabitants of Hellfire, and to rank amongst them the best of the best and worst of the worst. Don’t let the society we live in deviate you from the task at hand. Take your study guide, the Quran and Sunnah, with strength and faith, and be firm as you live your short life in this prison called Dunya.”
……Thursday was the last day of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month.
“We ask Allah to be pleased with us, reward us with Janna [paradise], and we seek refuge from his anger and the punishment of the Fire,” Abdulazeez wrote on the blog.
And he made trips to the Middle East:
Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, 24, a Kuwaiti-born Chattanooga resident who was killed by police during his shooting rampage Thursday, traveled to Jordan in 2014 and may have also visited Yemen.
Sources close to the investigation told Fox News authorities are trying to determine whether Abdulazeez had any contact with extremists during his seven-month stay in Jordan.
Duh.
Paging the FBI: Abdulazeez worshiped at the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga.
