Wanna know how impressed Putin is with Obama? He just finalized the takeover of Crimea.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law Friday completing the annexation of Crimea.
The ceremony at the Kremlin means Crimea has become part of the Russian Federation as two administrative districts, Crimea and the port city of Sevastopol.
Before signing the law, Putin hailed the incorporation of Crimea into Russian territory as a “remarkable event”…
Western leaders and the new regime in Kiev have rejected the move, claiming Moscow’s actions constitute an illegal land grab.
Putin’s signature marked the end of an official process that he started on Tuesday with a passionate speech in front of members from both houses of parliament.
……Earlier on Friday, Soviet chess legend-turned-political activist Garry Kasparov warned Western leaders in a Washington Post op-ed that “there is no dealing with” Putin and that only a show of strength could stop the Russian leader.
That show of strength will never appear. For that, it would take a leader with the fortitude of Reagan and a NATO with the guts to back him up. Right now, we have neither.
Obama is a foreign policy wimp and the Euros are too attached to Russian oil, and don’t think Putin doesn’t use that to his advantage:
“Our Western partners headed by the United States prefer not to be guided by international law in their practical policies, but by the rule of the gun,” he told a joint session of parliament.
“They have come to believe in their exceptionalism and their sense of being the chosen ones. That they can decide the destinies of the world, that it is only them who can be right.”
Obama’s first gesture of “sanctions” brought a round of laughter from the Russian Prime Minister:
Comrade @BarackObama, what should do those who have neither accounts nor property abroad?
Or U didn’t think about it?) http://bit.ly/1ebMXDM
I think some prankster prepared the draft of this Act of the US President
“That Obama, he’s such a prankster.”
On that note, Putin has decided at least for now, that no further humiliation is necessary:
There is no need for Russia to further retaliate against U.S. sanctions, President Vladimir Putin said Friday as Russia’s upper house of parliament endorsed the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.
Moscow made its first retaliatory shot on Thursday by banning nine U.S. officials and lawmakers from entering Russia, but Putin indicated that Russia would likely refrain from curtailing cooperation in areas such as Afghanistan.
While Russia quickly moved toward finalizing its annexation of Crimea, with the upper house of endorsing it in a unanimous vote, Ukraine’s prime minister pulled his nation closer into Europe’s orbit by signing a political association agreement with the European Union at a summit of the bloc’s leaders in Brussels.
……Russia is expected to play a major role in the planned withdrawal of U.S. and other NATO forces from Afghanistan later this year by providing transit corridors via its territory, and Putin’s statement seems to indicate that the Kremlin at this stage has no intention to shut the route in response to U.S. and EU sanctions.
Putin’s hegemony is extending to Latin American communist countries. He’s making plans to build military bases in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. Which means another threat in our own back yard.
Wow. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that Putin hasn’t annexed the rest of the former Soviet countries…..yet.
