The Central Intelligence Agency is planning to use armed drones to target Al Qaeda militants in Yemen, where growing instability poses a national security threat.
A U.S. official confirmed to Fox News that the secret plan has been in the works for months, as leaders have eyed the power vacuum left by anti-government protests and an assassination attempt on Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
While the U.S. has conducted military strikes with Yemen’s permission since 2009, the CIA has different legal restrictions that allow the agency to conduct operations even if Saleh reverses past approval or leaves power, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
Additionally, CIA drones use smaller warheads, which officials hope will lower the risk of civilian deaths and anti-American backlash in Yemen, the newspaper said.
……In the wake of the killing of Al Qaeda leader Usama bin Laden, jihadists have moved from other safe havens to Yemen. Al Qaeda leadership in the country is viewed as “the trifecta,” as it includes American cleric Anwar Al-Awlaki, a former protégé of bin Laden and a former Guantanamo Bay detainee.
Where’s all the anti-war lefties?
The Obama administration is intensifying its illegal secret war in Yemen as armed rebellions against the U.S.-government-backed dictatorship of Ali Abdullah Saleh (left) threaten to overthrow the regime. But while the mainstream press has been cheering on the unlawful military campaign, experts warned that it could easily backfire.Witnesses said multiple civilians were killed in an American air strike late last week supposedly targeting suspected militants — an unavoidable consequence of jet fighter and drone attacks that will almost certainly stir up more anti-U.S. sentiment. And the secret bombing campaign has actually been stepped up in recent weeks on orders from the White House, according to military officials cited in various news reports.
What lawful or constitutional authority Obama believes he possesses to wage secret wars is unclear. Congress has not even authorized the strikes, let alone declared war. But officials claimed the purpose of the attacks was to kill militants, some of whom the government alleges could be linked to al Qaeda.
U.S. forces have also been unsuccessfully firing missiles in recent weeks supposedly aimed at an American citizen believed to be hiding in Yemen — a cleric named Anwar al-Awlaki. Despite the fact that al-Awlaki was meeting with top U.S. military officials immediately following the September 11 attacks, Obama purported to authorize the U.S.-born Imam’s extrajudicial assassination after the cleric became a suspected supporter of terrorism.
No one knew about this involvement, escalating or otherwise. Since the ‘Arab Spring’ commenced, we are now conducting military operations in Libya as well as Yemen.
During the Bush-led war against the Al Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan and the WMD-wielding thug in Iraq, the leftwing moonbat brigade had a seven-year fit. They screamed about the “constitutionality” in spite of the fact that Congress passed a joint resolution approving the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama, the hopey changey messiah campaigned on a platform of anti-war and anti-Bush rhetoric, only to extend the successful Bush doctrine in those countries. On the other hand, he’s acted in true Dhimmi fashion by snubbing Israel and supporting Islamofascist cutthroats.
The Republican-controlled House issued a non-binding resolution chastising Obama for failing to provide a “compelling rationale” for the Libyan mission and demanding answers in the next 14 days on the operation’s objective, its costs and its impact on the nation’s two other wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They stopped short of demanding an immediate end to military operation. I’m sure The Anointed One is shaking in his bunny slippers.
Now that Obama’s name is on the blame line for what can be described as a real violation of the War Powers Act, the Left can barely manage a squeak of indignation. Their new political pragmatism is to keep blaming Bush, attack Sarah Palin, and hope the masses don’t notice how this Epic Failure has ‘fundamentaly transformed’ our domestic and foreign policies into a careening train wreck.
