Jonathan Rinderknecht is facing three federal criminal charges related to the fire, following an investigation by the Los Angeles field division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the Los Angeles Fire Department, and the Los Angeles Police Department.
The affidavit contained “digital evidence, including the defendant’s ChatGPT prompt of a dystopian painting showing, in part, a burning forest and a crowd fleeing from it.”
Federal arson charges carry a minimum sentence of five to 20 years in prison. Because the fire led to serious injuries and death, prosecutors may choose to seek the death penalty.
Jonathan Rinderknecht was arrested in Florida and will be transferred to the Central District of California to face trial.
The Palisades Fire began in early January and burned through more than 23,000 acres, destroyed more than 6,000 buildings, and claimed 12 lives.
Investigators found that the fire began near a popular hiking trail in Topanga State Park, and raged for 24 days until firefighters were able to contain the blaze.

Today we are announcing the arrest of 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht on a criminal complaint charging him with maliciously starting what became the Palisades Fire in January.
The complaint alleges that Rinderknecht started a fire in Pacific Palisades on New Year’s Day — a blaze that eventually turned into one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history, causing death and widespread destruction.
Among the evidence that was collected from his digital devices was an image he generated on ChatGPT depicting a burning city.
Rinderknecht’s initial appearance is scheduled for today at 1:30 p.m. EDT in U.S. District Court in Orlando.
The indictment described Rinderknecht’s ChatGPT prompts in the months before the fire, including one in which he described burning the Bible.
“I am 28 years old. And… I basically… This just happened. Maybe like… I don’t know, maybe like 3 months ago or something. Like, the realization of all this. I literally burnt the Bible that I had. It felt amazing. I felt so liberated,” Rinderknecht wrote.
After he allegedly set the Lachman fire, Rinderknecht allegedly asked if he would be responsible for a fire because of a cigarette.
Wild fires are a yearly thing in California. They can be contained if the resources are managed properly. Dems always manage to make a bad situation worse.

As California homeowners watch their lives go up in flames, they may want to pause a moment and credit the assclowns in their own state and local governments for creating obstacles to wildfire prevention.
