The arraignment Saturday of the five defendants in the 9-11 attacks stretched into the evening as the self-proclaimed mastermind and his four co-defendants refused to answer the judge’s questions and interrupted the proceeding with prayers and outbursts – all in an apparent attempt to delay the process.
The appearance of the five men at the military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, marked the first time in more than three years that the public has seen Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the other men.
Mohammed arrived wearing a white turban. His beard is now down to his chest and graying but streaked with red henna.
More than seven hours into the hearing, the judge at the U.S. military base in Cuba hadn’t yet read the charges against the men. They face 2,976 counts of murder and other charges related to the 2001 attacks and could receive the death penalty if convicted of the most serious crimes.
All five defendants deferred their pleas until a later date.
The hearing began at about 9 a.m. local time and almost immediately got delayed when the defendants took off their earphones that provide Arabic translations.
The other defendants — Ramzi Binalshibh, Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali and Mustafa al Hawsawi – joined Mohammed in refusing to answer questions from Army Col. James Pohl, the judge presiding over the proceedings.
At one point, two defendants got up and prayed alongside their defense tables under the watchful eyes of troops arrayed along the sides of the high-security courtroom.
Bin Attash was put in a restraint chair for unspecified reasons, then removed from it after he agreed to behave.
The man who once bragged about planning Sept. 11 “from A to Z” may mount a defense after all to charges that he orchestrated the worst terror attack in U.S. history, with families of the dead watching intently from the U.S. on closed-circuit TV.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, charged with four others with planning and helping to carry out the 2001 terror attack that sent hijacked jetliners into the World Trade Center and Pentagon, will be arraigned Saturday at the U.S. military base in Cuba.
Mohammed had previously mocked the military tribunal and said he would welcome the death penalty. His co-defendant, Ramzi Binalshibh, also told the court he was proud of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York, Washington and Shanksville, Pa.
But “I don’t think anyone is going to plead guilty,” said Jim Harrington, Binalshibh’s civilian lawyer, who added the defendants are expected to fight the charges against them, which include murder and terrorism and carry a potential death penalty.
Harrington declined to say what would be the basis of his defense and lawyers for Mohammed did not respond to messages seeking comment.
……The men never entered formal pleas in previous hearings, but Mohammed had told the court that he would confess to planning the attacks and hoped to be a “martyr.” He dismissed the military justice system, saying, “After torturing, they transferred us to inquisition land in Guantanamo.”
The ‘martyr’ bit is seriously overused. Mohammad is a murderous shitbag looking for sympathy. In the end, he’ll be just another dead muzzie carcass.
Cheryl Bormann, the attorney representing Walid bin Attash, came decked out in a hijab, apparently because her client insisted on it. She also asked that the court order other women to follow her example so that the defendants do not have to avert their eyes “for fear of committing a sin under their faith.”
Don’t expect the other females in the courtroom to follow Bormann’s symbolic fellatio on Islam. Those muzzie pigs should be shown in no uncertain terms that Americans don’t kowtow to their ‘religion’ or their misogyny.
This trial is going to be an absoulute clusterfuck, with the muzzie terrorists putting on a freakshow throughout the proceedings. It’s a formality. All five of them, including the entire collective Islamofascist network of support in the Middle East, are guilty of the deaths of almost 3000 people on 9/11. They commit atrocities all over the world in the name of their “allah”, so GITMO will be in business for a long time.

To show that he is somehow unable to understand the charges against him? That somehow, he was not in his right mind as a Muslim??? Imagine how wrong it would be for an officer sworn to uphold our Constitution to pray for the long life of a traitor or a murderer. And so I pray that those who betrayed our country and broke our laws supplying weapons and material support to the enemy south of the border a swift end to their existence so they can no longer inject their corrupt nature into every aspect of our country.
And so I pray to the spirits of my ancestors and to the Christian God that the new leader take his office quickly. I pray that he crushes the foul and deceitful among the ranks who take perverse pleasure in violating rights and the privacy of our nation’s people. May he swiftly replace the vile corruption that permeates the leadership of our country.
