Fool them once, twice….
On Sunday’s “NBC Nightly News,” correspondent Pete Williams previewed details of a new book, The Terrorist Watch: Inside the Desperate Race to Stop the Next Attack, by Ronald Kessler, in which Kessler revealed information obtained by the an FBI agent who extensively interviewed Saddam Hussein and found, among other things, that the former Iraqi leader had deliberately tried to “fool the U.S.” into believing he had weapons of mass destruction because “he wanted Iranian leaders to believe that he had nuclear and biological weapons.” The FBI agent, named George Piro, also reported that Saddam Hussein “hoped the post-Gulf War sanctions on Iraq would dissolve, allowing him to pursue a nuclear capability.”
“Saddam Hussein told his American captors that he so feared Iran, he wanted Iranian leaders to believe that he had nuclear and biological weapons. So he planned to fool the U.S. by, among other things, stalling U.N. inspectors to make it appear he had something to hide, weapons of mass destruction or WMD. But he hoped the post-Gulf War sanctions on Iraq would dissolve, allowing him to pursue a nuclear capability.”
Not only is NBC slow on the uptake, they missed the fact that we discovered WMD that he had stored and hidden from inspectors:
1) 1.77 metric tons of enriched uranium: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3872201.stm
2) 1,500 gallons of chemical weapons agents:

3) 17 chemical warheads containing cyclosarin: http://www.bizzyblog.com/PolishChemMunitions070204.html
4) Over 1,000 radioactive materials in powdered form meant for dispersal over populated areas:

5) Roadside bombs loaded with mustard and “conventional” sarin gas, assembled in binary chemical projectiles for maximum potency: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,120137,00.html
And this tidbit:
BAGHDAD, Iraq, March 12 – In the weeks after Baghdad fell in April 2003, looters systematically dismantled and removed tons of machinery from Saddam Hussein’s most important weapons installations, including some with high-precision equipment capable of making parts for nuclear arms, a senior Iraqi official said this week in the government’s first extensive comments on the looting.
The Iraqi official, Sami al-Araji, the deputy minister of industry, said it appeared that a highly organized operation had pinpointed specific plants in search of valuable equipment, some of which could be used for both military and civilian applications, and carted the machinery away.
The MSM reported these weapons in 2005, and then promptly came down with a case of selective amnesia; denying any discovery for the last two years.
Now, comes NBC to tell us that Hussein planned to get more nukes, and only “faked” having them to begin with? Apparently he wanted to “fool” everyone into thinking he had the WMDs already in his possession, use the tactic as a ploy to outlast the U.N. sanctions, and hope the whole thing would just fade away. Then he’d really start the ball rolling.
Gawd, what convoluted logic.
I can’t begin to describe the idiocy on the part of our liberal broadcasters. I can only speculate as to whether or not the FBI agent believed Hussein’s “just kidding” cock and bull story about the WMDs he really had but ‘didn’t have’.
The documented discoveries should put to rest any doubt.
But don’t hold your breath.
