Six years ago, a leftie assclown wrote a racist screed for Newsweek that smeared Irish-Americans.
Does “Irish need not apply” still apply at Newsweek?
The magazine is under fire after publishing an opinion piece this week titled “Why are all the conservative loudmouths Irish-American?”
The article, written by Van Gosse, a history professor at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Penn., was published Monday and seeks to explain how “putative Irishmen” such as former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan and ex-White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon “are now the face of the hard Right.”
Fox News’ Sean Hannity fired back, calling the article “a disgusting, ignorant display of bigotry.”
“Perhaps Newsweek should learn the history of people like my Grandparents who came to this country with no money, faced discrimination and poverty all in the hopes that their children and grandchildren could have a better life.
……Gosse, who says he is a quarter Irish-American on his father’s side, asked in the article, “Why has the ascent of a bunch of people who in an earlier period might have been called Micks drawn no notice at all?”
……Gosse wrote, that by the 1960s, Irish Catholics, once in the periphery of American society, had “finally made it and become fully ‘white.’”
“Having fought their way to full inclusion, many were intent on pulling up the drawbridge,” he wrote.
“Jump forward to the present…Irish America has lost virtually all its distinctive qualities, becoming just one more version of whiteness colored by ethnicity,” Gosse wrote, adding someone saying they are “Irish Catholic” is like saying they are “Midwestern.”
“The only thing “Irish” about them is a talent for invective, which makes for a compelling style, a mix of pugnacity and certainty,” Gosse continued. “They are smart, articulate, and not at all embarrassed, especially when their opinions are vicious.”
Readers were quick to point out the bias in Gosse’s words, some calling the piece “racist” and demanding Newsweek apologize to Irish-Americans.
“Some major bigotry going on here. What was newsweek thinking publishing racist diatribe?!?” one reader commented.
Another wrote: “This reads like an old fashioned Wasp wishing the Irish knew their place.”
“I’m second generation Irish American on my father’s side,” another critic commented. “I’m not usually bothered by Irish stereotypes. But this article is so dripping with ignorance it’s jaw dropping and utterly offensive. Replace the word ‘Irish’ with any other ethnicity and it would never have gone to print and/or the author would’ve been fired. I’m stunned that a person of such ignorance is allowed to teach.”
In 1992 Gosse was a national board member of the Committee In Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES), a leftist organization established in America by prominent members of the Salvadoran Communist Party and Cuban intelligence in order to support El Salvador’s militant guerrillas. CISPES was also part of the Soviet-controlled World Peace Council, which sought to manipulate the opinions of Americans through protests and disinformation campaigns.
In July 1992 Gosse endorsed the national conference of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS), which was held at UC Berkeley. He was also a member of CCDS.
……In the mid-1990s Gosse was a contributing editor with the Oakland-based Institute for Social and Economic Studies, which sponsored CrossRoads magazine—a periodical that, according to KeyWiki.org, sought to “bring diverse Marxist and socialist traditions to bear while exploring new strategies and directions for the progressive political movements.”
From 1995-2000, Gosse was the organizing director of Peace Action (formerly SANE/Freeze).
In January 2003 Gosse co-founded Historians Against the War (HAW) at the annual meeting of the American Historical Association. From the fall of 2002 through 2008, he served on the steering committee of United For Peace and Justice.
Since 2004, Gosse has helped direct the “F&M Votes” campaign, which he describes as “a joint student/staff/faculty effort” at Franklin & Marshall College that “seeks to both register and turn-out our entire student body on Election Day.”
In June 2005, Gosse identified “three criteria [necessary] for a successful movement to oppose U.S. foreign policy,” a policy which he viewed as aggressive, militaristic, and exploitative. Specifically, Gosse called for a movement that “constantly spreads into new geographic and demographic spaces (and sectors), so as to keep structures of power on the defensive”; “will manifest a multi-strategy and multi-tactics approach to swarm conventional structures of power and policy-making elites, never letting up and wearing them down, in the political equivalent of guerrilla warfare”; and “will focus on opportunities to connect to so-called ‘mainstream’ … legislative and electoral politics, since this is the arena where a movement must register its gains …”
……In 2009 Gosse was listed as a signer on the website of Progressives For Obama (later renamed Progressive America Rising). That same year, he co-founded the Post-Capitalist Project (PCP), a cooperative, nonsectarian alliance of leftist journals, popular education centers, and electronic media that promote a “transition beyond capitalism toward a socialist future.”
Over the years, Gosse has made clear his deep contempt for the state of Israel. He is a supporter of the Hamas-inspired Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. He is a signatory to a list of individuals endorsing the U.S. Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI). And he has used his Twitter account to post many messages denouncing Israel and its policies.
……In 2017, Gosse co-authored a letter to San Francisco State University (SFSU) president Leslie Wong in defense of SFSU professor Rabab Abdulhadi, a USACBI founding member who has repeatedly and publicly glorified Palestinian terrorists.
……Gosse is also a member of Democratic Socialists of America and a steering committee member of the Radical History Review.
And of course, a Prog’s resume wouldn’t be complete without the requisite rant labeling Donald Trump as “fascist”.
Gosse conveniently ignores the actions and ideology of the wingnuts on his own side of the political spectrum, who have turned into the fascists they warned us about.
This one gave a Reichstag speech in Philadelphia and his acolytes promptly went forth and committed assault, vandalism, and murder against Republicans.
The Dems and their media tools are the biggest hate group on the planet. Their political platform involves hate, rage, and bigotry against conservatives; white, black, and Hispanic.
But they’re liberal bigots, so it’s okay.
