Authorities in a Milwaukee suburb continued overnight to deal with the aftermath after a red SUV plowed into Christmas parade marchers and spectators Sunday, striking more than 20 adults and children.
Some fatalities occurred at the Waukesha event, police Chief Dan Thompson told reporters at an evening news conference, according to FOX 6 of Milwaukee.
Waukesha city officials early Monday confirmed that at least five people had died and more than 40 suffered injuries. They warned that both numbers could change.
Authorities have identified the person of interest as Darrell Brooks, and say he has a long criminal history.

When the trial started, he fired his lawyers and decided to represent himself, which consists of rants and disruptions that already forced the judge to remove him from the courtroom on at least one occasion.
Brooks has turned the murder trial into a circus.
Darrell Brooks Jr., the man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more after driving his SUV into a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, last year, is making a mockery of his trial with his disruptive behavior.
Brooks is facing 76 charges, including six counts of first-degree intentional homicide, each of which carries a mandatory life sentence.
On Thursday, Brooks, who represents himself at trial, erroneously argued for the case against him to be dismissed because he did not receive “verified copies” of court documents, Fox News reported.
However, Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Dorow called Brooks’ arguments “ridiculous.”
“The only argument I could discern in those 50 minutes is that this case be dismissed,” Dorow told Brooks and noted that he did not file a “proper motion” to dismiss his case.
Brooks’ antics continued into Friday, the tenth day of trial when he continually interrupted Judge Dorow with inappropriate outbursts.
During one interaction, Brooks contended that court documents incorrectly categorized his case as a civil matter, which delayed the start of the trial.
“Mr. Brooks, you’re talking about an irrelevant matter. I’m starting the trial,” Dorow said.
“Right here, it says it’s a civil matter,” Brooks said, pointing to a document. Brooks urged Dorow to address his concerns before the jury entered the courtroom.
……Dorow discussed Wisconsin’s evidence rules and said they do not allow “unfettered questioning of witnesses that are not relevant, or that call for hearsay, or for a variety of other reasons that are speculative,” which Brooks has repeatedly done throughout the trial.
“You’re not being fair, you’re not being fair though,” Brooks once again said.
“I think it’s always fair, but I disagree with the characterization,” Dorow said. “I think it has more to do with your lack of understanding of the rules of evidence and the rules of procedure which you knowingly and freely and voluntarily and deliberately made a choice to represent yourself.”
While one of the prosecution’s witnesses described what he saw the day Brooks allegedly drove his SUV into the Christmas parade, Brooks corrected the witness to claim that he did not identify by his legal name.
A clear example of his stupidity was illustrated during his “cross examination” of a witness:
Cross-examination was contentious on Monday as Waukesha parade murder defendant Darrell Brooks tried to trip up a witness in his trial.
Prosecutors are using testimony from Backler and others to establish Brooks’ actions fleeing the site of the tragedy. Backler testified he was working around his yard on Central Avenue. His garage was open, he testified. He was aware of the parade but did not attend it, he said. He testified he went to check after hearing noise around the east side of the garage. He said he found a man there — namely, Brooks.
The witness said he did not know this man’s identity at the time, but he saw his mugshot in the Waukesha murder case the next morning and recognized him.
“I asked him what in the f-ing hell was he going,” Backler said. Brooks was trespassing, he said.
He said during direct examination that he spoke to Brooks a little bit. Brooks asked if Backler could call an Uber, according to testimony.
“I need to get home,” Brooks allegedly said. Backler refused and told him to leave his yard. Brooks eventually complied with that, though he repeatedly asked for an Uber, according to the testimony.
Shown surveillance footage in court, Backler identified Brooks as the trespasser. He also repeatedly identified him in court — something Brooks challenged him on over and over again. Brooks suggested that Backler got his height and weight wrong in the description to police in a non-emergency call.
“Best of my knowledge was that you were either Black, Latino, or mixed,” Backler said, as Brooks cut him off.
“Who is ‘you?’” Brooks said. “Who is ‘you?’”
Judge Jennifer Dorow told Brooks to let Backler answer a question before interrupting him with another one.
Backler reiterated the description.
“So it would be fair to say you didn’t know at the time?” Brooks said.
“I was giving a general description,” Backler said.
“So it would be fair to say that you weren’t sure,” Brooks said.
“I was positive that it was you,” Backler said.
“Who is ‘you?’” Brooks said.
“You,” said Backler. “I’m looking at you.”
“And how did you come to that conclusion? The ‘you?’ conclusion?” Brooks said.
Backler pointed his finger at Brooks. “I’m looking at you.”
“How did you come to that conclusion?” Brooks said.
……“I’m looking at you,” Backler said. “You’re the guy.”
……Brooks, who described himself as a “sovereign citizen” and later as “sovereign,” has repeatedly objected to being called his name in court, and has previously filed a subpoena for the “State of Wisconsin” to testify. On Monday, he questioned about Backler about his subpoena to testify and who it named as the plaintiff in this trial. Backler said he believed it was the city of Waukesha or the state of Wisconsin.
He killed Jackson Sparks, 8, Virginia Sorenson, 79, LeAnna Owen, 71, Tamara Durand, 52, Jane Kulich, 52 and Wilhelm Hospel, 81. More than 60 others were hurt.
……Darrell E. Brooks, a registered sex offender who admitted in a video that he pimps children. The career criminal was released back into the streets on a paltry $1000 bond despite being charged with bail-jumping and facing a plethora of violent felonies and misdemeanors just over two weeks ago, according to Wisconsin Court Records.
The sack of shit has a record a mile long, and he capped it off with a deliberate act of mass murder. Wisconsin outlawed the death penalty so he’ll sit in prison breathing precious oxygen while the taxpayers for the bill for his upkeep.
The system has fallen short of real justice.
