In one of his Truth Social bombs, President Donald Trump insisted we should rename Lake Ontario to Lake America after Canada refused to accept his trade negotiation terms. It obviously echoes his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
It’s easy to find these whole geographic kerfuffles unnecessary. But the media hated the first one so much that The Associated Press found itself restricted from the White House press pool for refusing to accept the new gulf terminology. What they hate is anything Trump does to add a patriotic pro-America tinge to something that they associate more with his ego than with patriotism. They see red—as in a red MAGA cap.
On the Lake Ontario battle, HBO host Bill Maher joked: “The liberals are very pissed at this. They say you can’t just go around changing things to fit your political agenda. Just ask any Latinx birthing person.”
As anyone who watches the “evolution” of what terms are acceptable, the Left regularly changes the terminology and expects everyone to follow its changes. Try to keep up with The Associated Press Stylebook, which calls the tune for the press.
These term tyrants routinely genuflect to ethnic and LGBTQ+ pressure groups and their demands to remake the language we’re all supposed to use. They tried to force “Latinx” on people, but the Latinos seemed to hate it the most. Illegal immigrants are “undocumented,” homeless people are “unhoused,” and gender is “assigned at birth.”
Describing a woman as a “birthing person”—to include “men” with a uterus—strikes most people as waging war on biological truth. The use of “pregnant person” instead of “pregnant woman” has caused some pushback from feminists.
But those aren’t on the map, the Left might suggest. OK, well, it wants to cancel and rename all kinds of landmarks to satisfy its urge for wokeness. Just in this decade, the Left has pulled down all kinds of statues. Last week, it removed three statues in Richmond to clean that Old South house: Confederate Gens. Stonewall Jackson and “Extra Billy” Smith, as well as Confederate Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire.
Joe Biden renamed nine major U.S. Army bases that honor Confederate leaders, including Fort Bragg, Fort Benning, Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, and Fort Rucker. He also renamed nearly 650 geographic features across this country.
Under Native American (or is that “Indigenous”?) Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, they created a “Derogatory Geographic Names Task Force” and changed the names of things with offensive terms like “Squaw.” None of this was considered controversial by our media elites because everything a Democrat renames in the cause of wokeness is good news. Or not news.
The woke police forced name changes for the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Indians, and many college and high school athletic teams with “derogatory” mascots. But now they also seem to find the use of “America” on the map to be offensive.
Conservatives are usually the ones who like to stick with traditions and not rename things based on the newest ideological fads. Liberals can’t seriously object to renaming things. They just want to be the only people who get to rename things.
The social justice mob is going after food products and t.v. shows.
Eskimo Pies are “derogatory”.
Uncle Ben’s rice and Mrs. Butterworths’ syrup are too much for the triggered BLM.
Cream of Wheat’s black chef is under scrutiny.
Innocuous mascots on the Rice Krispies box are “racist” because they’re three white boys.
The Washington Redskin’s logo has been deemed “racist”, even though it was designed by Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, chairman of the Blackfeet Nation and president of the National Congress of American Indians who thought it reflected pride in his heritage.
The Washington Wizards used to be the Washington Bullets. The name was changed because activists didn’t like the connotation of violence. It hasn’t changed a goddamned thing, has it?
Police shows “Live PD” and “Cops” were both yanked off the air following a backlash by BLM supporters. Apparently, shows that depict cops doing their jobs was too traumatizing.
Aunt Jemima pancake mix was changed to “Pearl Mining Company“.
It was based on a real person named Nancy Green.
Green was born a slave in 1834 in Montgomery County, Kentucky. (The 1900 census shows her birth as 1854, but slave births were not precisely recorded, and the handwritten “3” might have been misread as a “5”.) When she died in 1923, Green was a national celebrity having become America’s first living trademark.
Green’s story starts in 1888 when the Pearl Milling Co., which produced a variety of milled products, incorporates in St. Joseph, Missouri. A year later, the company originated its ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour mix and called it Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix. Unlike today when businesses can promote their products on national television, radio, and social media, it was challenging in the late 1800s to gain national exposure. Pearl Milling planned to introduce Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix during the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition that was being held in Chicago.
……..Almost overnight, “Aunt Jemima” Green became famous, turning the Pearl Milling Company booth into an Exhibition sensation. With hundreds crowding around, she demonstrated the easy-to-use pancake mix, serving attendees that flocked to the booth to both taste the delicious flapjacks and hear her friendly banter while cooking. (This is the same format for today’s cooking shows but was a novel presentation in 1893.)
Green was so popular that the Exposition had to hire additional security personnel to keep crowds moving along. Everyone wanted to taste the pancakes AND hear her playful banter as she prepared the mix for cooking in the booth’s makeshift kitchen.
The Pearl Milling Co. knew they had dual winners: the pancake mix and Nancy Green as Aunt Jemima. When the Exhibition was over, Green signed a generous lifetime contract that included promotional tours throughout the United States. (Was it really generous? We don’t know except that in the 1910 census, Green put “housekeeper” as her occupation.)
……..Nancy Green remained the Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix spokesperson until her death in 1923 at age 89. Her passing was front-page news across much of the nation, with The New York Times being a key exception.
Her descendants spoke out that they feel their family legacies are being “erased from history.
The ‘racist’ tag extends to responsible behavior. Expecting students to show up for class on time is an affront to “cultural differences”.
There’s still work to do in the triggered cancel culture department.
